Who is a gifted child?

Everyone is naturally endowed. God is the giver of all children and there is no child without a talent or gift. Both formal and informal environments are responsible for success or failure of any child. Nigeria has a lot of gifted individuals.

A gifted child is naturally endowed with above average intelligence or exceptional ability in a specific sphere of skill or knowledge.  In some states or countries, definition of giftedness has to do with Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of 130 and above.  Some schools or professionals use multiple measures of giftedness and assess a wide variety of talents, including verbal, mathematical, spatial-visual, musical, and interpersonal abilities to determine who a gifted child is.

A child is gifted if he/she is excelling in more than one subject in educational setting. Peers or relatives of this child may give him/her names such as “allrounder”, “efiko”, “omowe”, “igi iwe”, and/or “over-syllabus”.

Gifted children are inexhaustible resources. Their contributions to the society will bring about development if they are identified, nurtured and encouraged. It is the duty of every citizen to put in place measures that will enable gifted children to positively influence our environment and showcase us to the global system.

Try to discover your area of giftedness, thrive to develop it and influence your community. If all of us use our natural traits as expected, we shall sing melodious songs and dance in joy.
